ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and storage on the shear strength of ultratranslucent zirconia. 36 blocks of ultra-translucent zirconia were fabricated (7x7x2mm) and sintered. Then, divided into 12 groups according to the "surface treatment" (C -Primer; Al -Sandblasting with Al2O3 + Primer; Si -Silicate + Primer; Gl -Glaze + HF + Primer; Z -Zirlink; Zp -Zirlink + Primer) and "storage" factors (ST-with 150 days/37º and without). After surface treatment, five cylinders (Ø=2mm; h=2.0mm) of resin cement (n=15) were constructed in each ceramic block; at the end, the shear strength test was performed (1mm/min, 50Kgf), and analysis of surface failures. 60 additional samples (2x2x2mm) were made for extras analysis (surface roughness, MEV, and EDS). Bond strength and surface roughness data were statistically evaluated by ANOVA (2 factors/1 factor), Tukey test (5%), and Weibull analysis, respectively. ANOVA (2-way) revealed that all factors were statistically significant for bond strength. The silicatization groups (SiST: 30.47AMPa; Si: 29.21AMPa) showed the highest bond strength values, regardless of storage (Tukey's test). While the groups treated with Zirlink (ZST: 2.76FMPa; Z: 5.27EFMPa) showed the lowest values, just similar to the GlST group (5.14EFMPa). The Weibull modulus (m) showed a statistical difference between groups (p=0.000). ANOVA (1 factor) revealed that the "surface treatment" factor (p=0.0000) was statistically significant for surface roughness. Therefore, the application of Zirlink and Glaze on pre-sintered zirconia did not promote efficient adhesion of the ultratranslucent zirconia to the resin cement, even when associated with a primer containing MDP.

ABSTRACT

Dental fluorosis can cause changes in the enamel surface, conditioning its functionality and esthetics. The application of dental adhesives is a treatment option; however, their use on fluorotic teeth can result in limitations. The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of two different adhesives, one with 10-MDP and one without 10-MDP, in different degrees of dental fluorosis. This is an in vitro study on dental enamel samples, a total of 180 samples with the inclusion criteria were treated, randomly divided into two groups of 90, according to the type of dental adhesive, where each group was again divided into three groups of 30 samples, representing different degrees of dental fluorosis according to the Thylstrup-Fejerskov index (Group I: TF1 and TF2; Group II: TF3; Group III: TF4). Normality tests, two-factor ANOVA, and post-hoc tests were used to determine differences between the groups, with a significance level of 95%. As results, a statistically significant difference was shown between the use of dental adhesive with 10-MDP and the three groups of dental fluorosis (p=0.011), in addition, a Tukey post-hoc test on the groups treated with 10-MDP adhesive revealed a statistically significant difference between group I versus group II, and group I versus group III, (p=<0.05). It is concluded that the use of adhesive systems with 10-MDP presents a better shear bond strength on enamel with dental fluorosis grades I and II in the Thylstrup-Fejerskov index.

ABSTRACT

Métodos: Estudio experimental in vitro.

Introduction: The bonding of indirect restorations is one of the most important steps, in order to achieve adequate retention and sealing of the interface between the restorative material and the tooth. Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength of different bonding agents to two metal alloys used in dentistry. Methods: In vitro experimental study. One hundred specimens of base metal alloys, 50 nickel-chromium and 50 nickel-chromium-titanium were prepared and randomly divided into 5 groups. This division was made according to the bonding agent used: two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond; CSB), universal adhesive system (Single Bond Universal; SBU), self-adhesive resin cement (Maxcem Elite; ME), glass ionomer (IV) and zinc phosphate (ZnPO). After the application of each bonding agent, the treated specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 hr at 37 ºC and subjected to a shear bond strength test. Results: Shear bond strength was significantly influenced by the type of bonding agent (p = 0.002) and the type of alloy used (p < 0.001). Shear bond strength was highest when using the Clearfil SE Bond system, followed by Single Bond Universal; the differences between Maxcem Elite and Zinc Phosphate were not significant. Finally, IV did not show adhesion to any of the metal alloys used. Conclusions: The use of Clearfil SE Bond increased the bond strength of resinous cements to metallic alloys(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study assessed the effect of thermal aging on the interfacial strength of resin cements to surface-treated PEEK. Methods: Ninety-six PEEK blocks were allocated into 4 groups (n=24), according to following surface treatments: SB - sandblasting with aluminum oxide; SA - acid etched with 98% sulfuric acid; CA coupling agent (Visio.link, Bredent) and CO - control group (untreated). Surface roughness (Ra) was measured and one cylinder (1-mm diameter and height) of Rely-X Ultimate - ULT (3M/ESPE) and another one of Panavia V5 - PAN (Kuraray) were constructed on the treated or untreated PEEK surfaces. Half of the samples of each group were thermal aged (1,000 cycles). Samples were tested at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min in shear mode (µSBS). Ra and µSBS data were compared using one- and three-way ANOVA, respectively, and Tukey's tests. Results: SA and SB samples had the roughest surfaces, while CA the smoother (p<0.001). Thermal aging reduced µSBS regardless the surface treatment and resin cement used. There was interaction between surface treatment and resin cement (p <0.001), with ULT showing higher µSBS values than PAN. SA provided higher µSBS than SB for both resin cements, while for CA µSBS was higher (PAN) or lower than SB (ULT). Conclusion: Aging inadvertently reduces interfacial strength between PEEK and the resin cements. If ULT is the resin cement of choice, reliable interfacial strength is reached after any PEEK surface treatment. However, if PAN is going to be used only SA and CA are recommended as PEEK treatment

ABSTRACT

Statement of problem: the bond strength between adhesive cement and root dentin can be affected by irrigation protocols. Purpose: therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to answer the following question: Do irrigation solutions used during root canal instrumentation influence the adhesion of glass fiber posts to root dentin? Material and Methods: this study followed the recommendations of PRISMA 2020 for writing. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS databases were searched for articles published until 26 January, 2022. Grey literature and a manual search were also performed. The inclusion criteria were based on the PICO strategy: permanent human or animal teeth (P), which were irrigated during root canal instrumentation with endodontic substances (I) and compared to irrigation with sodium hypochlorite at various concentrations (C) to analyze the bond strength of glass fiber posts (O). Two authors independently performed data extraction and the risk of bias. Results: eight articles were included. Four articles were classified as having a high risk of bias, where the others as medium risk. Studies have reported conflicting results regarding the influence of irrigating solutions and the different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite on the adhesion of glass fiber posts to root dentin. Conclusion: the heterogeneity between studies did not allow the conclusion of a true estimate regarding this topic, and further well-designed studies are needed to clarify this issue. Register: CRD42020221835. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the effect of material type and veneer thickness on the final color and shear bond strength of PEEK bilayered restorations. Material and Methods: sixty-four square-shaped core specimens (7×7×2), were fabricated by CAD/CAM technology from two high-strength polymers, BioHPP (High-Performance Polymer, group B n=32), and Pekkton® ivory (PolyEtherKetoneKetone, group P n=32) then were veneered with resin composite (crea.lign dentin A3). Specimens from each group were divided (n=16) according to the veneer layer thickness (0.5 & 1 mm), then according to the test applied (n=8), either ΔE or shear bond strength (SBS). Specimen surfaces were treated according to the manufacturer's instructions. Specimens were veneered according to the manufacturer's instructions. The mode of failure was evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 40 x magnification after the shear bond strength test. Results: data showed parametric distribution and variance homogeneity and were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The significance level was set at p<0.05 for all tests. Statistical analysis was performed with the R statistical analysis software version 4.3.1.Results of two-way ANOVA showed that material types and veneer thicknesses had an individual significant effect on the color change. For the shear bond strength, only the sample thickness (1mm) had a significant effect (p=0.033). The majority of samples in different groups presented a mixed failure mode with all the differences being not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: the thickness of the resin composite veneer can significantly affect the final esthetic outcome and shear bond strength of a bilayered restoration.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the G-CEM ONE adhesive enhancing primer on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement (G-CEM ONE) to both tooth structure and two different CAD/CAM blocks (GC Initial LiSi and Cerasmart 270). Material and Methods: Forty specimens (cylindrical-shaped, 5 mm in diameter and height) were milled from both CAD/CAM blocks (20 specimens from each block type). Forty sound upper premolars were sectioned to the level of peripheral dentin, then randomly divided into four groups (n = 10): A1: GC Initial LiSi without adhesive enhancing primer; B1: Cerasmart 270 without adhesive enhancing primer; A2: GC Initial LiSi with adhesive enhancing primer; B2: Cerasmart 270 group with adhesive enhancing primer application. The CAD/CAM blocks were cemented on teeth using a self-adhesive resin cement (G-cem one). The shear bond strength was assessed using a computerized universal testing machine. A digital microscope was used to study the mode of failure. The shear bond strength values data were analyzed statistically using paired t-test and independent t-test at the significance level of (0.05). Results: A significant difference was shown in the shear bond strength values among groups (P =0.000). The highest shear bond strength value was revealed in group A2, while group B1 exhibited the lowest shear bond strength value. Conclusion: Using the adhesive enhancing primer on the tooth's surface improved the resin cement's bond strength to CAD/CAM blocks. Additionally, GC Initial LiSi exhibited higher bond strength than Cerasmart 270, with or without the primer (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aims: To verify the efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser for debonding of lithium disilicate (LD) reinforced glass ceramic veneers of different thicknesses. Methods: Forty bovine teeth were prepared and randomly divided into four groups (n=10/group) according to the ceramic disc thickness: C0.5 (Control group) and L0.5 (Laser irradiated group) in which LD discs had a thickness of 0.5mm and 5mm diameter; C1 and L1 in which LD discs had a thickness of 1mm and 5mm diameter. The lithium disilcate discs (IPS E.max®, shade HTA2) were fabricated following the manufacturer's recommendations and cemented to the prepared tooth surface. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser was applied to the laser groups at 2.5W and 25Hz for 60seconds. Universal testing machine was used to evaluate the shear bond strength for all samples at a cross head speed of 1mm/min in an inciso-gingival direction parallel to the sample surface. After debonding, the samples were examined under stereoscope to evaluate the mode of failure according to the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: Laser irradiation significantly diminishes the shear bond strength from 10.868 MPa to 3.778 MPa for C0.5 and L0.5 groups respectively (p=0.00) and from 14.711 MPa to 4.992 MPa for C1 and L1 groups respectively (p=0.00). The shear bond strength required for debonding increased with increasing thickness of discs, but without significant difference (p=0.110). Higher ARI scores were seen in the laser groups (more cement remaining adhered to the tooth) when compared to the control groups. Conclusions: The Er,Cr:YSGG laser could be an effective and useful tool in debonding of lithium disilicate ceramic veneers as it decreases the shear bond strength required for veneer debonding

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effect of two ceramic primers on the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) to two types of self-adhesive resin cement and one BisGMA-based resin cement. Zirconia specimens were sandblasted with 27-µm aluminum oxide and composite cylinders were cemented with resin cement with or without the prior use of ceramic primers. Nine groups (n=12) were randomly distributed according to the cement (self-adhesive RelyX U200/3M ESPE, self-adhesive Maxcem Elite/Kerr, and BisGMA-based dual-cure RelyX ARC/3M ESPE) and ceramic primer (Z-Primer Plus/Bisco and Porcelain Liner M/Sun Medical Co.). After luting, the specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and then submitted to the µSBS test. The data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA followed by the Scheffe post hoc test (p<0.05). There were significant differences between RelyX U200 and other groups. There were also significant differences between the RelyX U200 group without ceramic primer and other groups without ceramic primers (p<0.05). Self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200 and MaxCem) presented higher microshear bond strength (6.17 and 2.32 MPa) than the conventional resin cement (RelyX ARC) when a porcelain primer was not used (0.43 MPa). When using Porcelain Liner M, the results of RelyX ARC (2.94 MPa) were equivalent to the results of self-adhesive cement (3.93 and 2.11 MPa). When using Z-Prime Plus, the results of MaxCem (5.36 MPa) were lower than those of RelyX U200 (9.59 MPa) but equivalent to those of RelyX ARC (6.07 MPa). When using the RelyX ARC, the use of both ceramic primers improved bond strength to zirconia. When using self-adhesive resin cement, Z-Prime Plus improved microshear bond strength values. It can be concluded that, after 24 hours, the highest µSBS results were obtained when using Z-Prime Plus and RelyX U200 self-adhesive cement.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke (CS) on physical and mechanical properties of ceramic, polycarbonate and alumina ceramic brackets. The null hypothesis tested was that aesthetic brackets would not be influenced by CS. Methods: Ninety aesthetic brackets were allocated to three groups (n = 30): ceramic (GCE), polycarbonate (GCO) and alumina ceramic (GPS). Ten samples of each group were assigned to color and surface roughness analysis, performed before (T0) and after (T1) exposure to CS; and twenty samples were allocated into control and experimental groups (n = 10) (not exposed and exposed to CS, respectively) for shear bond strength test (SBS). Exposure to CS followed an adaptation of the method described by Le Mesurier. Colorimetric reading, surface morphology and roughness, SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were assessed. Statistical analysis comprised independent and paired t-tests, ANOVA/Tukey and Fisher's exact tests (α = 0.05). Results: Changes were observed in brackets' color (NBS: GCE = 2.4; GCO = 1.9; GPS = 2.1), surface roughness (ΔRa: GCE = 1.1 ± 0.8 µm; GCO = 1.9 ± 1.5µm; GPS = -0.3 ± 0.1 µm / ΔRz: GCE = 1.4 ± 1.0 nm; GPS = -0.5 ± 0.1 nm); and SBS (GPS - experimental = 221.8 ± 48.6 N) after exposure to CS (p< 0.05). Conclusions: Exposure, in vitro, of aesthetic brackets to CS resulted in changes of color to darker and more opaque shades, surface roughness alterations, and higher SBS values. ARI scores were not associated with exposure to CS.

ABSTRACT Objective: The study aimed at determining the antibacterial properties of composites containing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) or titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs), and a fluoride-releasing composite against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and to evaluate the effect on shear bond strength (SBS) of nanoparticles-modified composites. Materials and Methods: An orthodontic composite was modified by adding 1% w/w Ag NPs or 1% w/w TiO2 NPs. Composite discs were prepared to evaluate the antibacterial properties of these modified composites against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, using three different antibacterial tests, namely: Disk agar diffusion test, Biofilm inhibition test and eluted component test. For evaluating the shear bond strength, 80 extracted premolars were collected and divided into four groups (n=20 each), which were bonded with stainless steel preadjusted Edgewise brackets, by using these modified composites. Their SBS was then compared with that of the control group, using a universal testing machine. Results: Composite discs containing nanoparticles and fluoride were capable of producing growth inhibition zones for all bacterial types. Results of the biofilm inhibition test showed that all the study groups inhibited the bacterial count, in comparison to the control group. A significant difference of SBS was observed between all groups. Conclusion: The antibacterial activity of orthodontic composites modified with Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles was significant, compared with conventional and fluoride-containing composites. The control group showed the highest SBS, followed by fluoride, titanium, and silver groups, with statistically significant difference in mean SBS values among all groups.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Head and neck cancer is considered one of the most common types, and its treatment includes radiotherapy, which can trigger side effects and undesirable sequelae in the oral cavity and dental tissues. Objective: This study aimed to make an in vitro evaluation of the shear strength and failure mode of ceramic orthodontic brackets bonded with two different composites in enamel submitted to ionizing radiation. Methods: After the study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee, 60 healthy human premolars were selected and divided into two groups, based on the absence or presence of ionizing irradiation of the enamel. The fragments were thermocycled and then randomly subdivided into two subgroups, according to the composite used for bonding the ceramic brackets (Inspire Ice - Ormco) to the enamel (n = 15): Transbond XT composite (3M), and Light Bond composite (Reliance). After 24 hours, the specimens were submitted to the shear strength test, and the failure mode was analyzed using a stereomicroscope and confocal microscopy. The shear strength data were submitted to two-way ANOVA, considering a significance level of 5%. Results: The groups submitted to radiation presented lower shear strength values (4.48MPa) than those not irradiated (9.23MPa) (p< 0.001), and the tested composites were not statistically different (p= 0.078). Regarding the fracture mode, all the groups presented mostly adhesive fractures. Conclusion: It was concluded that ionizing radiation negatively affects the adhesion of ceramic brackets, regardless of the composite used for bonding.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the routine clinical situation, the contamination by blood and/or saliva in restorative procedures can be happen in non-cooperation of the patient in dental office. The aim of the study was to assess in vitro shear bond strength of a resin sealant associated with two types of adhesives contaminated with saliva and blood. Healthy human molars were used and the specimens and the crowns were sectioned in the bucco-lingual direction, thus obtaining two segments of similar proportions (mesial and distal), totaling 60 surfaces, and the surfaces were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15). Group I (control) received no type of contamination and the sealant was applied. In group II, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 µl of saliva/blood and the sealant was applied. In group III, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 µl of saliva/blood and the Single Bond total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by application of sealant. In group IV, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 µl of saliva/blood and the Prime & Bond NT total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by the application of sealant. Samples were tested in the universal testing machine and the analysis of shear bond strength was performed. A difference between Group I (12.61MPa) and the other groups was found; Group II (2. 28MPa) was different than Groups III (7.07MPa) and IV (7.79MPa), but Groups III and IV were similar. The application of an adhesive system when there is contamination with saliva/blood is required prior to application of pit and fissure sealants. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study evaluated the effect of a desensitizer agent (DES) during bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) on enamel microshear bond strength (µSBS). Methods: Sixty bovine incisors were obtained and randomly distributed into groups (n=15): (C) Control: no desensitizing or bleaching, (DES) desensitizing gel application, (CP) bleaching with 10% CP and (CP/DES) bleaching with 10% CP combined with DES. Bleaching was performed for 6 h/day for 14 consecutive days. DES was applied for 8 h only on the 7th and 14th days of therapy. Specimens were stored in artificial saliva among the CP or DES applications and submitted to µSBS testing at three postrestoration times (n=5): 24 h, 7 days, and 14 days after bleaching using a universal testing machine. Failure modes were observed under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=5%). Results: Immediately after bleaching (24 h), CP promoted lower µSBS than the C and DES groups (p<0.05) but with no differences from the CP/DES. µSBS increased in the DES, CP, and CP/DES groups (p<0.05) when bonding was performed for 7 or 14 days elapsed from bleaching. CP/DES exhibited the highest µSBS among the groups 14 days after bleaching (p<0.05). Cohesive failure in enamel was predominant in the CP groups, while adhesive failure was mostly observed for the other groups. Conclusion: The use of a desensitizer during at-home bleaching maintained the enamel immediate bond strength, and its application favored bonding when the restoration was delayed for 14 days

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study evaluated the surface characteristics and bond strength of Y-TZP treated with Er:YAG laser at different focal distances. 120 Y-TZP blocks were divided into five groups (n=24), according to the surface treatment: no treatment (C-); sandblasting with silica-coated aluminum oxide particles (C+); and Er:YAG laser application at focal distances of 1mm (Er:YAG-1), 4mm (Er:YAG-4), and 7mm (Er:YAG-7). Surface characteristics were analyzed using Vickers microhardness, confocal laser microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). For the bond strength test, 100 Y-TZP blocks were subdivided into two subgroups (n=10), according to the resin cement used: with (MDP+) or without 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP-). The Vickers microhardness and surface roughness were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and bond strength by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test for both (α=0.05). Vickers microhardness differences were not observed between the groups (p>0.05); C+ showed higher surface roughness values. SEM images showed micromorphological differences between the groups. The XRD data detected tetragonal crystals for C- and, for the other groups, tetragonal and monoclinic peaks. For bond strength, no statistically difference significance were observed among the cements with or without MDP (p>0.05) but showed significant difference between the surface treatments (C+ > C- = Er:YAG1 > Er:YAG4 = Er:YAG7) (p<0.05). Suggested that the Er:YAG laser cannot replace conventional treatment with aluminum oxide particles and the presence of MDP in the resin cement had no influence on the bond strength.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different photoactivation protocols on shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic brackets bonded to dental enamel, on bond failure through the adhesive remnant index (ARI) and on the degree of conversion (DC) of a resin using the highpower photo activator Valo™ Cordless® (Ultradent) in Xtra power mode (3.200 mW/cm2 ). METHODOLOGY: The brackets were bonded (Transbond XT® , 3M Unitek) on 80 crowns of bovine incisors, randomly distributed into two study groups (N=40): monocrystalline brackets (Group 1) and polycrystalline brackets (Group 2). Each group was subdivided into 4 subgroups (n=10) according to the photoactivation protocol used: 3 or 6 seconds in the center; 3s in the mesial/3s in the distal; and 3s in the cervical/3s in the incisal. After storage for 4 months (distilled water/37°C), the shear test (100KgF, 1mm/min) was performed. For DC analysis, 80 resin discs were made with the same photoactivation protocols used in bonding brackets. The SBS (MPa) was evaluated descriptively, using Student's T test, ANOVA one- and two-way and by Tukey's post-test. The DC (%) was assessed descriptively, by ANOVA two-way and by Tukey's post-test. Union failures were classified according to the ARI, analyzed descriptively and by Kruskal-Wallis' test. RESULTS: Regarding the SBS, all protocols in Group 2 and only the photoactivation on the center for 3 seconds of Group 1 presented clinically accepted values; the values were significantly affected (p<0.01) by the type of bracket; and when comparing the corresponding intergroup averages, p=0.003 was observed between the protocols of 6s in the center and p=0.010 between the protocols of 3s in the cervical/3s in the incisal. In the DC evaluation, the values were significantly affected by the photoactivation protocol (p=0.002) and by the interaction between the factors (type of bracket*photoactivation protocol; p=0.033). ARI scores 4 (39.4%; p>0.05) and 3 (72.5%; p=0.001) were predominant in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSION: Caution should be exercised when bonding ceramic brackets with Valo™ Cordless® in Xtra power mode, because high SBSs were observed. SBS and DC might present statistically significant differences depending on the type of bracket and the photoactivation protocol applied. In general, it is suggested to use the polycrystalline bracket to the monocrystalline and apply 3 seconds of photoactivation in the center of the bracket (AU).

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate, in vitro, the influence of antioxidants (green tea extract - GT and sodium ascorbate - SA) on microshear bond strength (µSBS) of a universal adhesive system self-etching mode (UAS) to bleached enamel. Material and Methods: After obtaining 50 fragments of human dental enamel (4 mm x 4 mm), forty fragments were submitted to at-home bleaching technique using 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF, Ultradent) for two h/day, for four weeks. They were randomly divided in four groups (n = 10): GT - 10% aqueous GT solution (60 min); SA - 10% SA solution (10 min); Negative control - no antioxidant agent, immediately restored; PC1 (positive control 1) - no antioxidant agent, restored 14 days the bleaching procedure. Ten enamel fragments were assigned to PC2 group (positive control 2), in which the adhesive procedures were realized in non-bleached enamel. The UAS (Adper Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) was applied on enamel surface according to manufacturer's instructions and two cylinders (0.8 mm diameter) of nanoparticulate composite resin (Z350, 3M ESPE) were made on each sample. After 24 h, the cylinders were submitted to µSBS in a universal test machine (0.5 mm/min). Fracture mode was evaluated in stereomicroscope (30x magnification). SBS data, in MPa, was submitted to one-way ANOVA and fracture mode to Chi-square test (α = 0.05). Results: There was no statistical difference between the experimental groups (p = 0.545) and fracture mode (p = 0.16424). There was predominance of adhesive fracture in all groups. Conclusion: Neither the bleaching procedure nor the application of antioxidants to bleached enamel interfered in the bond strength of the tested universal adhesive system (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin composite to deep dentin, using 1 and 2.5% chitosan pretreatment as well as different adhesive systems. Material and Methods: 80 human maxillary molars were randomly divided to eight groups according to the type of adhesive system and dentin pretreatment (n = 10): I) two-step self-etch system (Clearfil SE bond); II) two-step etch-and-rinse system (Adper single bond 2); III) 2.5% chitosan + Clearfil SE bond; IV) 2.5% chitosan +etch + Adper single bond 2; V) etch + 2.5% chitosan + Adper single bond 2; VI) 1% chitosan + Clearfil SE bond; VII) 1% chitosan + etch + Adper single bond 2; VIII) etch + 1% chitosan + Adper single bond 2 (chitosan solution (w/v): 2.5 g and 1 g of chitosan (Sigma Aldrich, USA) was dissolved in 100 ml of 1% acetic acid). Plastic molds were positioned on dentin and filled with composite (Z350, 3M ESPE, USA). SBS (MPa) was tested using a universal testing machine. ANOVA tests, Tukey's test, and independent t test were used to analyze data (p ≤ 0.05). Results: The highest SBS value among self-etch groups was observed with 1% chitosan (p = 0.001). In the etch-and-rinse group, the SBS of 1% chitosan was significantly lower than the other groups. Chitosan treatment following acid etching led to higher SBS in comparison to when chitosan was applied before etching, with the significant difference in 1% concentration (p = 0.030). A predominance of mix fractures was observed in dentin. Conclusion: Improved dentin bond strength can be achieved through immediate dentin pretreatment with 1% chitosan in self-etch adhesive systems. Chitosan Pretreatment may not be advantageous for etch-and-rinse adhesive systems. (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to determine compressive and shear bond strength of blocks prepared with bulk-fill and nanofill composite resin combinations. Materials used were Filtek Bulk Fill (FBF) and Z350 (both 3M-ESPE) and Surefil SDR flow (SFF) - Dentsply. To determine shear bond strength, cylindrical specimens 10 mm thick were prepared with composite consisting of thicknesses of 6 mm of one material and 4 mm of the other, in the following combinations: G1: FBF- FBF; G2: Z350-Z350, G3: FBF-Z350, G4: Z350-SFF and G5: SFFSFF. Materials were cured using a 1100 mw/cm2 light for 20 seconds for each layer. Samples were stored for 24 hours at 37 °C in distilled water and shear bond strength was determined. To assess compressive strength, cylindrical samples 4 mm diameter and 6 mm thick consisting of 4 mm + 2 mm were used in the same combinations as described above, stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 hours, after which compressive strength was determined. Both tests were performed with a Universal testing machine at a cross head speed of 1 mm/min. Results were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey's test. Means and standard deviations in MPa for each group were the following: Shear bond strength: G1: 435.87 (65.86), G2: 233.6 (108.15), G3: 279.2 (22.05), G4:449.1 (109.35) and G5: 196.6 (51.16). Compressive strength: G1:160.07(4.27), G2: 149.49 (14.06), G3: 156.10 (29.99), G4: 199-30(39.28), G5: 171.23 (28.71). Evaluation with ANOVA showed no significant differences among combinations for compressive strength (p>0.05) and significant differences for bond strength (p<0.05). Tukey's test showed three homogeneous groups. Under these experimental conditions, it can be concluded that the study combinations have adequate mechanical behavior, equivalent to materials used individually. However, shear bond strength was affected by the combinations analyzed.

RC: G1:160.07(4.27), G2: 149.49 (14.06), G3: 156.10 (29.99), G4: 199-30(39.28), G5: 171.23 (28.71).

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the mechanical properties of the supraspinatus tendon in different age groups using Supersonic Shearwave Imaging (SSI) elastography. Methods: We evaluated 38 healthy individuals of both genders, 20 being in the range of 20 to 35 years and 18 being over 60 years. The shear modulus of the supraspinatus tendon was measured by SSI elastography, always on the right side. Means between age groups were compared and statistically analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test followed by the student's t-test and were established as a statistically significant value of p ≤ 0.05. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed when the mean values of the shear modulus of the supraspinatus tendon of young adults (23.98 ± 9.94 KpA) were compared with those of older adults (17.92 ± 6.17 KpA). Conclusion: We found a difference between the means of the shear modulus measured by the SSI elastography, showing a significant decrease of the shear modulus with the chronological age progression.
